5 Reasons Why You Should Buy Free-Range Eggs

June 30, Jun

You can find a variety of eggs in the supermarket. You’ll find them in cartons of white eggs, brown eggs, cage-free eggs, omega-3 enriched eggs, and even free-range eggs. Not all eggs are created equal, however, and that certainly applies to free-range eggs.

Free-range eggs come from chickens who can wander around a farm.  This reason alone makes free-range eggs better than most eggs, but what exactly do they have those other kinds of eggs don’t? Read on below to find out.

Reason #1: They Provide a Balanced Nutrition

Free-range eggs are a nutritional powerhouse. A single free-range egg can give a person many nutrients. These include 6 grams of protein, 70 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as healthy doses of Vitamins A, D, and E. They also have plenty of choline to support memory and nerve function.

Reason #2: They Are a Great Source of Vitamins

Free-range eggs contain up to six times more vitamin D than the average egg. Vitamin D helps with maintaining your strong bones and teeth. It also supports the body’s immune system and regulates your insulin levels.

Vitamin A, on the other hand, strengthens eyesight and the immune system. Vitamin E can also help by protecting your body from free radicals. Free radicals are elements that can harm the body’s blood and heart functions, such as tobacco smoke.

With these in mind, you can opt to drop the vitamin supplements that you take since free-range eggs are naturally rich in Vitamin A, D, and E.

Reason #3: They Ensure Healthier, Happier Chickens

Some egg producers go the extra mile to ensure shoppers have peace of mind, especially those with a penchant for animal welfare. To do this, egg producers need to be certified by a regulating body, such as Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC). HFAC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making sure that farm animals are raised as humanely possible under their program, “Certified Humane Raised and Handled”.

With a Certified Humane label, eggs are produced on a “human scale”, which means no factory equipment was used to produce the eggs. If you’re a stickler for animal rights, HFAC certification ensures that the animals were raised in exceptional conditions.

These hens eat a healthy diet, have access to freshwater, and are allowed to roam as they please. These elements make chickens happier and healthier and in turn, produce better eggs.

Reason #4: They Give Less Cholesterol

The average egg contains approximately 423 milligrams of cholesterol. Free-range eggs, on the other hand, only contain approximately 277 milligrams. If cholesterol is a concern for you, free-range eggs are the way to go!

Reason #5: They Make Meals Much More Satisfying

A single free-range egg contains approximately 72 calories, which means a single free-range egg can let you stay full until lunchtime. Not many breakfast meals can do that—unless you eat a lot for breakfast!

Free-range eggs are considered better than most eggs because of their nutritional benefits. Purchasing them also ensures that you take care of farm animals in your own way, as patronizing farms that produce free-range eggs are certified cruelty-free.

Getting proper nutrition from food is important but at the same time, it’s important to ensure that the livestock you get your food from should be raised cruelty-free.
